Neuroinflammation and -degeneration in anorexia nervosa

The overall aim of Ida Nilsson’s research is to clarify the neurobiological mechanisms involved in development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa. The hypothesis is that neuroinflammation and -degeneration, particular in the hypothalamus, are explaining the paradoxical response to underweight, i.e. continued starvation, in this disorder with 10% mortality. Ida will present preclinical and clinical data supporting this hypothesis, including immunohistochemical pictures from anorectic mice and elevated plasma levels of markers of neuronal injury in individuals with anorexia nervosa.
